30-day
Juice Fast: DAY One- Mind Prep!
I
am not a big fan of certain veggies like broccoli but I love it in my juices. I
also do not have the ‘veggie’ talk with my 3year old because he loves the juices;
which is great because it means we have much fewer visits to the doctors.
Juicing
fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to increase your intake of raw,
nutrient rich food with high enzymatic activity.
It
really is important to eat foods that have their enzymes intact; this is
because food is meant to self-digest!
Did
you know that? Yes, food is meant to self-digest!
Food
without enzymes is dead food! Dead food puts a lot of strain on your digestive
system. So when you eat that burger or that well-cooked meal, since it has no
enzymes to self-digest, your digestive system has to help out, by requesting
for the production of enzymes to break it down. The harder the food substance,
the more enzymes, would be needed. Your pancreas is the enzyme factory and if it
is constantly over-worked, it could start to mal-function which could result in
Type II diabetes.
You
get the gist?- The bottom-line is that it is trés important to eat your fruits
and veggies in their raw, organic states.
The
other thing I need to point out is the importance of eating fresh organic
foods. Why organic? Studies have found it to be more nutrient-rich since it is
grown using non-genetically modified seeds and also grown in healthy soil.
With
non-organic food, you would be exposed to growth hormones, herbicides,
pesticides, Genetic engineering, Irradiation, and Petro-chemical based fertilizers.
Non-organic farming also destroys the natural flora, fauna and natural Eco-system of the soil itself.
All these chemicals seep down into the water
table where much of our water for drinking and other uses is sourced.
Organic
is definitely better for your health and the environment. But it is not the
cheapest as well. So here is a guide to help you decide what to buy organic and
what compromises can be made.
1.
Pineapple-
its thick skin keeps pesticide residue out,
2.
Asparagus-
faces fewer pest threats, as such it gets sprayed with pesticides less,
3.
Broccoli-
same as asparagus above,
4.
Sweet peas-
this also has less pesticide residue,
5.
Avocado pear-
its thick skin keeps pesticides out,
6.
Cabbages-
it’s quite pest resistant and as such does not need much spray of pesticides to
thrive,
7.
Mangoes-
the thick skin keeps pesticides out,
8.
Papaya-
same as mangoes above,
9.
Water Melon
and other Melons- same as mangoes above.
The general idea is that, if it has a thick
skin, then it is more likely to keep the residue out. Calciferous vegetables
like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and asparagus are also pest resistant to
some extant so they tend not to have so much of a pesticide spray.
You
should, however err on the side of caution and give these a good wash before
peeling or eating.
Here
is a simple recipe I use to wash all my fruits and vegetables- even the organic
ones:
What
you would need:
1.
A large
bowl
2.
A vegetable
brush
3.
4 liters
of Water
4.
3 table
spoons Apple cider vinegar or baking soda
Instructions:
· Place fruits
and veggies in the bowl and cover with water. Ensure that the fruits and
veggies are submerged in the water. Adjust your water vs. apple cider vinegar
or baking soda quantities as necessary.
·
Leave to
sit for 5-10mins.
·
Scrub with
brush or use hands where necessary.
·
Rinse with
purified water.
·
Voila! This
helps to remove pesticide residue and some waxes.
Please note that citrus fruits tend to be
covered with wax. Look for labels that say ‘un-waxed’ at your grocery store.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s
get juicing!
